Introduction
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a strategy that
encourages organisations to operate in a way that protects social and
environment interest while achieving their business goals. This strategy provides
significant benefits to both organisations and the community. Have modern
businesses in Sri Lanka integrated the CSR strategy into their main business
goals? What is the role of HR on CSR? This article reviews the benefit of CSR
strategy for business and role of HR in CSR.
What is CSR?
According to European Union, sited in Hopkins (2006), CSR is
a concept where organisations integrate social and environmental concerns in
their business operations and interaction with their stakeholders on a
voluntary basis. Additionally, CSR is a responsibility of organisations for
their impacts on society. According to Stobierski (2021), key component of CSR as
below,

Environmental Responsibility
Organisations must minimise their environmental footprint by reducing emissions, recycling and conserving resources.

Ethical Responsibility
Ethical Practices involve faire treatment of employees, ensure safe work conditions and adhere to ethical standard to build trust and loyalty among organization stakeholders.

Philanthropic Responsibility
Organisations must engage in charitable activities, support community developments and invest on social causes.
·
Economic Responsibility
Company must balance profit with social and environmental impact and
ensures that business operations are sustainable and contribute positively to
society.
Why CSR is important to an organisation?
Engaging CSR activities provides crucial benefit for modern
organisations. It fosters trust and loyalty among customers. Today, modern
customers are very sensitive about the planet and its community, specially
developed countries. When they are purchasing products, there are highly
concerned about these factors. Therefore, it is crucial for every organisation
to integrate CSR strategies with their business and HRM strategies. According
to Lanphear (2019), There are key benefits include loyal customers, engaged
employees, and positive public attention for the organisation.

What is the role of HR in Corporate Social Responsibility?
According to CIPD (2013), HR professionals can play a vital
role in implementing and driving CSR within an organisation and their key
responsibilities and contributions are as follows.

Ensuring corporate social responsibility is a
part of the HR strategy
·
Minimising sustainability concerns through
people management policies and practices
·
Developing Management capabilities and promoting
organisational learning in CSR.
·
Ensuring alignment between the organisational
values, business activities and corporate social responsibilities.

By combining CSR & HR, organisations can create a more
engaged and sustainable workforce, leading to long-term organisational success.
Conclusion
CSR is a key strategy for modern business. It enhances
organizational values, boosts revenue and ensures sustainability. It leads an
organisation to operate with ethical, social and environmental considerations,
giving a positive impact on society and the plant. Therefore, HR professional
must focus their core attention on developing CSR strategies within their
organisations. CSR strategy is not common in most Sri Lankan organisations, as many
have not realised its value and benefits. However, a few leading Sri Lankan
organisations, such as John Keels, MAS, Capital Maharaja, TEG Holdings, have
actively engaged in CSR activities over the past two decade. These initiatives have
significantly enhanced their values and reputation.
